GULF SHORES, Ala. – The record-setting 2022 University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball campaign concluded this afternoon as the Skyhawks fell 3-0 to top-seeded USC in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at the Gulf Beach Place.
UT Martin left it all on the sand on the nation's biggest stage but ultimately the defending national champion Trojans (33-1) were ultimately just too much to handle, winning their 32nd consecutive decision.
At No. 3, the Skyhawk tandem of Kambree Lucas/Haeleigh Paulino battled but fell 21-13, 21-13. UT Martin's No. 1 team of Karen Scanlon/Logan Wallick also competed throughout but was defeated 21-10, 21-11. USC was able to advance to the round of eight following a win at No. 2 as the Skyhawk duo of Dylan Mott/Hannah Phillips fell 21-9, 21-15.
UT Martin's No. 4 and No. 5 pairs were still playing at the time of the clinching point but their matchups went unfinished. At No. 5, Brooke Kuball/Addy Vaughn kept things close (15-25, 10-15) while Kayla Carrell/Addison Conley (7-21, 9-18) were slotted at the No. 4 position in the Skyhawk lineup.
"Obviously we are sad to see our season come to an end," UT Martin head coach Jaclynn Wilson said. "These girls have worked so hard every day in the sand to get to this point. To get the opportunity to stand across the net from the No. 1 seed and defending national champion USC, it was an honor to represent the OVC and represent UT Martin in that moment. These girls have laid the foundation for our future and we couldn't be more proud."
The 2022 Skyhawk beach volleyball season will go down as the best in school history. After the program started with an 0-15 record in 2017, UT Martin accumulated 17 victories this spring – matching the entire amount of wins for the school heading into the season. The Skyhawks became the first program in Ohio Valley Conference history to appear in the NCAA Tournament, sweeping the league's regular season and tournament titles in the process. Nine different UT Martin representatives combined for 11 All-OVC postseason accolades while the Skyhawks landed four more players on the OVC All-Tournament team (including the Most Valuable Pair of Carrell/Conley).
