NORMAN, Okla. – Bryson Morrell tapped in a team-high five birdies today on his way to a 71 (-1) to guide the University of Tennessee at Martin in the second round of the NCAA Regional hosted by the University of Oklahoma.
A junior from Knoxville, Tenn., Morrell converted four birdies on the front nine alone – including three straight on Holes 7 through 9. In the process, he became only the fourth Skyhawk in the NCAA Division I Era (since 1992) to shoot under par in an NCAA Regional round – joining Hunter Richardson (2016 and 2017), Ben Reeves (2016) and Tate Chumley (2022).
Collectively, UT Martin carded a 306 (+18) in Round 2 – bringing its two-round total to 602 (+26). That score ranks 12th in the field with 18 holes remaining at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
"The conditions were a little tougher with high winds and the golf course still being firm and fast," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "With some of these pins, we put in ourselves in position where it was difficult to get up-and-down for par. We had a few bad holes and it was just one of those days where things just didn't go our way. It's been a great season – we're looking to end on a high note tomorrow."
Following Morrell in UT Martin's scoring lineup today was Jonathan Xoinis (75, +3), who registered three birdies and one of seven eagles in the entire round – penciling in a 3 on the par-5, 600-yard Hole No. 8.
Tate Chumley (79, +7) and Garrett Chumley (81, +9) wrapped up the team scoring as the brothers from Murfreesboro, Tenn. each had one birdie on the day. Jacob Uehlein (83, +11) was the fifth and final Skyhawk representative this morning.
For the tournament, Xoinis is ranked 33rd in the field of 75 with a 147 (+3) and is closely trailed by Tate Chumley (149, +5) and Morrell (150, +6). Garrett Chumley and Uehlein are each tied with scores of 159 (+15) through 36 holes.
Xoinis ranks fourth out of all players in the tournament in par-5 scoring (4.25, -6) and is responsible for a team-high eight birdies (10th in the whole field). Tate Chumley leads the team in par-3 scoring (3.13, +1) while Morrell boasts the best par-4 scoring average (4.15, +3) on the squad. Both Tate and Garrett Chumley top UT Martin with 21 pars apiece.
The Skyhawks are matched up with Missouri and Kent State during tomorrow's final round as they will start off the No. 10 teebox. Garrett Chumley will get Round 3 underway for UT Martin at 9:25 a.m. and will be followed by Uehlein (9:36), Morrell (9:47), Tate Chumley (9:58) and Xoinis (10:09).
