The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will play host to Ohio Valley Conference rival Southeast Missouri in a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday, April 6. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m. with Game 2 to follow.
Both Southeast Missouri and UT Martin currently sit in third and fourth place respectively in the OVC league standings. The Redhawks bring a 17-13 overall record and a 6-3 mark into Wednesday's affair while the Skyhawks are 20-12 on the season with a 5-4 league mark. One advantage in the series may go to the home team however where the Skyhawks have boasted a 10-1 record at Bettye Giles Field this season.
UT Martin is coming off a strong series win over visiting Belmont with a pair of victories after the Bruins entered the weekend riding an 11-game winning streak – including eight consecutive wins to start league play. Each of the contests were tightly contested with the Skyhawks tossing a shutout in the opener (W, 1-0) before dropping Game 2 by one run (L, 4-3) and capping off the series victory with a walk-off two-run home run by Kallie Pickens in the seventh inning (W, 2-1).
Veteran Erin Gallagher was one of the team's standout performers last week and was rewarded for it by being named OVC Pitcher of the Week. Gallagher stymied opponents all week by posting a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA in 15.2 innings of work. Included in that three-game week of performances was a seven-inning shutout and a five-strikeout relief appearance while holding opponents to a .164 batting average.
In the batter's box, Kaci Fuller continues to pace the team offensively with a .427 batting average which ranks third in the OVC. After tallying six hits last week, Fuller sits just one hit off the team lead while rattling off seven extra base hits and 15 RBIs on the season. Paige Clark (.358) and Kaitlyn Kelley (.336) have been consistent contributors all season long while Pickens is coming off a big week where she hit .400 and is sitting fifth in the league with 10 doubles.
Southeast Missouri is looking to build off a dominating three-game sweep of Morehead State in which the team outscored the Eagles 24-2 in the series. Reigning OVC Player of the Week Kaylee Anderson leads the team and ranks second in the league with a .447 batting average while tallying six doubles, seven home runs and 25 RBIs. The pitching staff is paced by Rachel Rook who is 10-6 with a 2.88 ERA in 92.1 innings of work.
