TUNICA, Miss. – For the fourth time this season, the University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad can call themselves tournament champions as the Skyhawks brought home the first-ever Carpenter/Chaney Classic trophy after a thrilling 3-2-1 win over Tennessee Tech at Tunica National.
After heavy overnight rainfall in the area led to an hour delay to all tee times, UT Martin capped off an unblemished 3-0 record in the field of eight Ohio Valley Conference schools. The match play event – named after legendary OVC head golf coaches Jerry Carpenter (UT Martin) and Dr. Rex Chaney (Morehead State) – featured a dozen matches in a 48-hour span.
"Today's win was a special ending to the inaugural Carpenter/Chaney Classic," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "The guys came out and stuck to our strategy. We were able to build a small lead early and were able to keep that momentum going through the afternoon to come away with a victory. Tennessee Tech is a great team – they played solid today and fortunately we did as well. I'm proud of the way the guys battled – they didn't let anything faze them or get them away from our gameplan. We executed when we needed to and that was the difference."

A pair of UT Martin golfers put the finishing touches on 3-0 records in the tournament as Garrett Chumley (3&2) and Jonathan Xoinis (2&1) earned victories today. Bryson Morrell pieced together a 3&2 win as well while Jacob Uehlein tied his head-to-head competitor to finish the event with a 2-0-1 mark.
Garrett Chambers (2&1) and Tate Chumley (3&2) competed throughout for the Skyhawks but were narrowly defeated.
For the tournament, Uehlein and Xoinis tapped in a team-best 12 birdies apiece while Morrell tied for second in the field of 48 golfers with a pair of eagles. Garrett Chumley also added an eagle today for UT Martin.
In other action today, Morehead State defeated Murray State by a 3-2-1 margin in the third-place match. Belmont won in a tiebreaker (30-26 in most holes won) over SIUE in the fifth-place contest while Austin Peay topped Tennessee State (5-0-1) in the seventh-place outing.
"To win the inaugural event and have Coach Carpenter here makes this one a little more special," Swafford said. "We'd like to send a big thank you to Bob Wolcott and his staff at Tunica National – they went above and beyond this week and took great care of all the teams. The golf course was in great shape and we appreciate the opportunity to come and have our tournament at Tunica National."
The Skyhawks close out the regular season next week at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate, visiting Hermitage Golf Course in Old Hickory, Tenn. on April 11-12.
