SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad leapt four spots today at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate, finishing on a high note in the rain-shortened tournament hosted by Missouri State.
The Skyhawks whittled a dozen strokes off their Round 1 tally, posting a 288 (+4) during the second round. UT Martin carded 65 pars – the most out of any of the 16 teams in the field – today to finish the tournament in eighth place at 588 (+20).
"I am proud of the way the guys competed this week," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "The conditions weren't easy and we certainly have areas to improve. But our effort was there all 36 holes and it showed in the way we finished up the second round today."
Junior Jacob Uehlein led UT Martin in scoring for the third straight round dating back to the Gulf Coast Collegiate earlier this month. The Tullahoma, Tenn. native rolled in a team-high three birdies on the way to a 70 (-1) today.
Bryson Morrell followed with an even-par 71 that included a birdie and one of only four eagles in the tournament, accomplishing that feat on the par-5, 508-yard Hole No. 8. Tate Chumley managed a pair of birdies on the way to a 72 while Garrett Chumley's 75 rounded out the Skyhawks' team score.
Jonathan Xoinis (76) registered one birdie as the final member of UT Martin's scoring lineup while Jackson Twerdahl posted a 77 while competing on an individual basis.
Overall, Uehlein placed 19th in the tournament standings with a 144 (+2). He led the squad in birdies (seven), par-4 scoring (4.16, +3) and par-3 scoring (3.00, E) – ranking fifth in the entire event in the latter category. Tate Chumley tied Uehlein for the team lead in par-4 scoring (4.16, +3) while Morrell ranked third in the tournament in par-5 scoring (4.38, -5) while securing a team-high 23 pars, sharing the team lead in that category with Twerdahl.
The Skyhawks resume their busy spring schedule next week when they travel to Houma, La. for the Ellendale Intercollegiate on March 28-29.
