UT MARTIN STARTS SPRING SLATE WITH A RODEO HOSTED BY EAST MISSISSIPPI THIS WEEK

MARTIN, Tenn. – Following a lengthy break from its fall schedule, the University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams open the spring semester at East Mississippi Community College on Thursday, March 17 through Saturday, March 19.
Starting this week, the Skyhawks embark on a five-rodeo Ozark Region schedule this spring. The remainder of the 2021-22 docket includes road visits to Pearl River (March 24-26), Arkansas-Monticello (April 21-23) and Northwest Mississippi (April 28-30). The middle of UT Martin's five spring rodeos is scheduled for April 7-9 as the Skyhawks will host their 54th Annual Spring College Rodeo at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion. The 2022 College National Finals Rodeo will once again take place in Casper, Wyo. on June 12-18.
The UT Martin men's squad finished the fall semester with a No. 9 national ranking with 2,830 points, which is also good enough for second place in the Ozark Region standings. UT Martin finished in the top-three in each of its first five rodeos of the season and boasts six different cowboys in the national top-25 of their respective events.
Will McCraw (header) and Cole Walker (heeler) each rank 11th in the country with 390 points in team roping while Jack Smithson ranks 12th nationally in saddle bronc riding (550 points). Stetson Bierman (490 points in bareback riding, 18th), Jesse Keysaer (330 points in steer wrestling, 24th) and Wyatt Hart (220 points in bull riding, 25th) have additionally performed well so far in 2021-22.
On the women's side, UT Martin collected 763.33 points spread across five rodeos in the fall – ranking fourth in the Ozark Region standings. The Skyhawk cowgirls won their season-opening rodeo of the season (383.33 points at Missouri Valley College on Sept. 23-25) and have tacked on two more top-five finishes so far this year.
Seven total UT Martin representatives currently rank inside the top-15 in the Ozark Region in miscellaneous events. Grace Bryant's 200 points rank third in breakaway roping and is followed by Brianna Pugh (130 points, eighth) and Jasmin Bakri (80 points, 15th) also find themselves ranked in that event. Shayne Mallory is ranked 12th in barrel racing with 85 points while four Skyhawks are ranked in the top-11 in the region in goat tying (Kailey Schmidt – 190 points, sixth; Emma Kate Wilder – 153.3 points, seventh; Bakri – 98.3 points, eighth; Lauren Heck – 63.3 points, 11th).
