
SIXTH SEEDED UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS TO OPEN OVC BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH SEVENTH SEED SIUE ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will enter the 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship presented by TicketSmarter as the sixth seed with a first round matchup against seventh seed SIUE on the docket scheduled for Wednesday, March 2. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. from the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
UT Martin enters the OVC Basketball Championship looking to build upon the team's recent success in the tournament, posting a 21-8 record in championship play under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan. In addition to winning four consecutive tournament championships from 2011-14, the Skyhawks have advanced to the finals in four consecutive years.
The Skyhawks (12-17, 9-9 OVC) finished the regular season by winning seven of their final 10 contests after a rigorous schedule which saw the team play 12 games in 25 days. During that span UT Martin limited opponents to just 53.6 points per game while forcing 19.7 turnovers per contest.
Two players earned postseason honors for the Skyhawks with junior guard Paige Pipkin earning a spot on the All-OVC second team while freshman Shae Littleford garnered a place on the five-person All-Newcomer team. Pipkin (12.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg) has led the team in scoring 14 times while eclipsing 20 points or more in three games. Littleford (10.7 ppg, 2.0 apg) is a three-time OVC Freshman of the Week selection while scoring in double figures 13 times.
SIUE (12-17, 8-10) enters the tournament field having won three of its last four contests – including two against teams in the championship field. The Cougars feature All-OVC first team and All-Newcomer selection Gabby Nikitinaite who paces the team with 13.8 points per game while Mikayla Kinnard ranks second on the squad with 12.3 points and 3.2 assists per game.
The two teams split the season series with each program winning on the other's home court. SIUE picked up a 62-58 win in Martin back on Jan. 1 while UT Martin won in Edwardsville, 67-62, on Feb. 10. The Skyhawks do lead the all-time series however, owning a 22-9 record against the Cougars – including the two programs lone meeting in the OVC semifinals back in 2018 by the final score of 69-67.
