The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will hit the road for a pair of games in the Land of Lincoln this weekend beginning with an Ohio Valley Conference matchup at SIUE on Thursday, Feb. 10. Tipoff from First Community Arena is scheduled for 11 a.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Thursday's meeting marks the second matchup between the two programs after previously squaring off in a New Years Day matinee in Martin. The game featured four lead changes and four ties while both teams placed three players in double figures offensively. When the dust settled, SIUE held onto a 62-58 road win after leading by as much as 19 in the third quarter.
The Skyhawks (7-15, 4-7 OVC) pushed OVC leading Belmont to its limits on Monday night by using stingy defense and patient offense to limit possessions. With the team playing short-handed without three key contributors, UT Martin held a lead for over 32 minutes before Belmont used a late push and key three-pointers to steal away a 45-39 win.
UT Martin hopes to return to full strength for the road trip behind its top scorer Paige Pipkin (13.9 ppg). In her recent absence, the Skyhawks saw strong performances by a pair of freshmen as Ella Thompson scored a career-high 15 points along with six rebounds while Shae Littleford reached double figures for the ninth time this season with 11 points and four assists against the Bruins.
SIUE (9-14, 5-7 OVC) is hoping to get back to its winning ways after dropping three consecutive games to Eastern Illinois (twice) and Murray State by an average of 13.3 points per game. In the team's most recent outing, the Cougars narrowly dropped a 70-68 decision at home to the Panthers on a last-second shot. The Cougars are led offensively by the play of three-time OVC Newcomer of the Week Gabby Nikitinaite who averages 13.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Mikayla Kinnard joins the squad in double figures with 11.6 points and 3.3 assists per game.
The two programs have met 30 times previously in series history with UT Martin holding a 21-9 advantage. The Skyhawks are 15-7 against the Cougars under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan while boasting an 8-5 mark in games played in Edwardsville.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ while fans can listen locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM as Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Brandon Burke (analyst) call the game from courtside. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
