HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Thanks to a Monday night thunderstorm forecast that is expected to bleed into Tuesday afternoon, this week's intended baseball matchup between the University of Tennessee at Martin and Alabama A&M has effectively been postponed. Both schools have already agreed upon a date and time for the rescheduled event, to be made up on May 17th at 3:00 in Huntsville.
Reaching the finish line of last weekend's season-opening series with a bit of a mixed bag against Miami (Ohio) at Skyhawk Field, UT Martin bounced back from consecutive losses on Friday and Saturday with an impressive 13-8 triumph in the finale at home. Nailing three runs in the 3rd along with five more in the bottom of the 7th, UTM emphatically avoided the series sweep to polish off the first-ever meeting between the two programs on a high note.
Beginning a season at home for the first time since 2010, UT Martin threw 11 different pitchers at the Redhawks over a 72-hour window, totaling 15 combined hits from the quartet of Jack Culumovic, Casey Harford, Will Smith, and Wil LaFollette.
While Tuesday's meeting was supposed to be a simple one-and-done contest held at Alabama A&M's facility, the Bulldogs will return the favor with a trip to Skyhawk Field on March 22nd, the last date on UTM's schedule before Ohio Valley Conference play begins on the final weekend of the month.
Now that Tuesday's game has been postponed nearly three months in advance, the makeup date in the Yellowhammer State will now stand as the Skyhawks' final meeting of the 2022 season, taking place 48 hours after the OVC finale at Southeast Missouri.
UTM will now turn their attention to this weekend's three-game slate against a different SWAC representative, visiting Alabama State in Montgomery. Friday's first pitch in Game 1 will begin a seven-game road streak for the Skyhawks before returning home on March 8th vs. Illinois State.
