MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program will look to close out the 2022 calendar year on a high note when it hosts the Morehead State Eagles in an Ohio Valley Conference holiday tilt. Tipoff on Saturday, Dec. 31 is set for 3:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's basketball game as part of a doubleheader.
Four of the last five matchups between these two squads in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center have been decided by single digits, including a pair of overtime decisions. Last season, KK Curry went off for a career-high 24 points, six rebounds and three steals but Morehead State eked out a 68-60 win on the Skyhawks' home floor. Chris Nix also accounted for a career-best 11 rebounds in that contest for UT Martin, who led for over 33 minutes of clock time before the Eagles wrapped up the game on a 17-4 run.
The Skyhawks (8-6, 0-1 OVC) are in the midst of their longest home winning streak to begin a season in two decades. UT Martin is averaging 97.7 points per game at home in 2022-23, paced by Parker Stewart (22.6 points per game, .532 three-point field goal percentage at home) and KJ Simon (18.0 points per contest on 52.9 percent shooting inside the Elam Center).
On Thursday, the Skyhawks fell by an 88-74 margin in their OVC opener at Little Rock. Simon's season-best 24-point effort paced five double-digit scorers for UT Martin, who lost for the first time this season when outrebounding its opponent (was previously 7-0).
Morehead State (8-6, 1-0 OVC) is coming off an 83-75 victory at Tennessee State as the Eagles were the only OVC team to claim a road win on Opening Night. Mark Freeman poured in a career-best 30 points while Jake Wolfe (14 points) and Drew Thelwell (13 points) helped head coach Preston Spradlin earn his 100th career victory. Tabbed as the OVC's preseason favorites, Morehead State leads the league in three-point field goal percentage defense (.281) and rebounding margin (+4.9).
