MARTIN, Tenn. – For the fifth time in the last seven seasons, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team will collide against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs when the two sides square off on Saturday, Dec. 3. Tipoff time is set for 1 p.m. CST on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks lead the all-time series against UNC Asheville by a 3-1 margin but fell in the only matchup in Kimmel Arena (occurring during the 2019-20 campaign). Last season in a 79-68 home triumph, KJ Simon dialed up a career-high 30 points (on 13-of-22 shooting) while Chris Nix added a double-double (12 points and 10 rebounds) for UT Martin, who is 9-6 all-time against current Big South Conference programs.
The Skyhawks (4-4) are coming off their fourth consecutive decision that was decided by six points or less, a stirring 86-83 victory over McNeese on Monday. Parker Stewart took over the Ohio Valley Conference scoring lead after a 34-point performance - the fifth 30-plus point outing of his UT Martin career and the most points recorded by any OVC player in 2022-23. Simon tacked on 22 points - including 15 of 20 Skyhawk points down the stretch in the second half - while Desmond Williams (four treys on his way to a season-best 12 points) and Koby Jeffries (season-high six assists in only 15 minutes) were also major contributors.
The Bulldogs (4-3) fell 79-66 at in-state rival NC Central on Tuesday. UNC Asheville shot 52.2 percent from the floor - including 9-of-18 from three-point range - but were hampered by 20 turnovers. Alex Caldwell (16 points), Drew Pember (15), Tajion Jones (15) and Nick McMullen (12) each scored in double figures for the Bulldogs, who rank 14th in the country in three-point field goal percentage (.406).
Pember currently ranks in the top-15 nationally in free throws made (44, seventh), scoring (21.6 points per game, 10th) and blocks (19, 12th) while Jones has averaged 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in three career outings against UT Martin - including a 21-point, nine-rebound effort in the Dec. 14, 2019 win in Asheville.
