The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team continues its six-game road swing with a matchup at Summit League foe South Dakota on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Tipoff from the Sanford Coyote Sports Center is slated for 3:30 p.m. with the contest being broadcast on Midco Sports.
The Skyhawks enter the matchup with a 3-6 record after starting out their current six-game road trip with a 1-1 record following a 66-54 victory at Vanderbilt before falling at South Dakota State (75-36) on Monday evening. In the team's first contest in eight days, UT Martin struggled to find its offensive rhythm with two starters out of the lineup while being limited to season-lows in points scored (36), field goal percentage (29.8 percent) and free throw percentage (42.9 percent).
One of the team's top performers is freshman Sharnecce Currie-Jelks who continued a stretch of strong outings by scoring in double figures for the sixth consecutive game. A two-time OVC Freshman of the Week, Currie-Jelks paced UT Martin with 14 points while adding four rebounds, two assists and a block against SDSU.
South Dakota boast a 4-6 overall record after an impressive campaign last season which saw the Coyotes advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. With a first-year coach at the helm in Kayla Karius, the Coyotes are looking to snap a five-game losing streak when the Skyhawks come to town. In South Dakota's most recent matchup on Sunday afternoon, the squad dropped a 76-60 decision.
The Coyotes are led offensively by sophomore guard Grace Larkins who leads the team in all of their major categories. Larkins has scored in double figures in nine of the team's 10 games while pacing the squad with 16.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.0 steals. Her best game came against Northern Colorado when she tossed in 30 points and eight rebounds.
This marks the second consecutive matchup for the Skyhawks against a member of the Summit League. Additionally, this is the first meeting against South Dakota in program history.
