MARTIN, Tenn. – Another first-time opponent graces the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball nonconference schedule as the Skyhawks travel to Youngstown State on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Tipoff time is set for 6 p.m. CST on ESPN+.
Two days after facing Pitt for the first time in school history, UT Martin (0-1) takes on a Penguin squad who won 19 games a season ago. Youngstown State is the second of five brand new opponents on the Skyhawks' 2022-23 slate as first-time matchups against Prairie View A&M (Nov. 20), McNeese (Nov. 28) and Chicago State (Dec. 11) await.
Although UT Martin is unfamiliar with the Penguins, the program has found success within the Horizon League. The Skyhawks are 6-2 all-time with an active three-game winning streak against current members of the conference, having not lost to a Horizon League opponent since Dec. 18, 2011.
This outing marks UT Martin's first visit to the Buckeye State since a Dec. 30, 2018 tilt at Bowling Green. Last season, the Skyhawks were scheduled to visit Ohio State on Dec. 21 but the game was cancelled due to NCAA COVID-19 protocols.
UT Martin is looking to bounce back after an 80-58 setback in Monday's season opener at Pitt. KJ Simon collected team-highs of 11 points and five rebounds for the Skyhawks, who limited the Panthers to 36.6 percent shooting (including a 26.8 percent effort from beyond the three-point arc) and forced 15 turnovers.
Youngstown State (1-0), who won a game in The Basketball Classic postseason event in 2021-22, began its season on a high note with a 92-81 road triumph at Canisius on Monday. The high-scoring Penguins led by a 58-35 margin at the halftime break thanks to a 70.6 percent (24-of-34) shooting performance in the first 20 minutes. Malek Green's double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds powered four double-digit scorers for Youngstown State.
