
WALTHER PACES SKYHAWK RIFLE IN SEASON OPENER AGAINST MOREHEAD STATE

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle team revved up its 2022-23 campaign over the weekend, falling by a 4,659-4,602 margin over a two-day matchup against 16th-ranked Morehead State at the Skyhawk Rifle Range.
UT Martin collected 2,275 points in smallbore on Friday before managing 2,327 points in air rifle on Saturday. The Eagles posted 2,297 smallbore points and 2,362 points during the air rifle portion.
Sophomore Alayna Walther led the way for the Skyhawks, dialing up 1,161 aggregate points to edge out Nick Fares (1,156) for the team lead. That duo was followed by Joey Kovach (1,147), Rachel Sprague (1,138), Jeffrey Bourassa (1,107), Jesse Chamberlain (1,106) and Victoria Petersen (1,081).
Walther's successful season debut was keyed by a career-best effort in smallbore as the Avella, Pa. native fired a 579 – two points better than her previous collegiate high. Fares and Kovach each came away with identical scores of 568 while Sprague's 560 and Chamberlain's 541 completed the lineup.
In air rifle, Fares commanded UT Martin with 588 points. Walther was responsible for 582 points while Kovach registered 579 points. Sprague and Chamberlain additionally represented the Skyhawks in the scoring lineup, earning 578 and 565 points, respectively.
The duo of Bourassa and Petersen competed on an individual basis. Making his collegiate debut, Bourassa managed 540 points in smallbore and 567 points in air rifle while Petersen produced scores of 534 in smallbore and 547 in air rifle.
UT Martin returns to action in eight days when it travels to nearby Murray, Ky. for an Oct. 16 neutral-site matchup against Ole Miss.
