MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time in nearly a month, the University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian squad will compete in front of its home crowd as the Skyhawks take on No. 7 South Carolina on Friday, Oct. 28 and Lynchburg on Saturday, Oct. 29. The South Carolina matchup will start at 9 a.m. while the Lynchburg meet will begin at 10 a.m. in the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
Since opening the 2022-23 campaign with a 9-1 home triumph over Dartmouth on Oct. 1, UT Martin has hit the road for its next three meets. Currently ranked No. 10 in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association poll, the Skyhawks have won five of their last six matchups at home – outscoring its opponents by a 64-31 margin. UT Martin's only setback during that stretch came to eventual national champion Oklahoma State (13-7) on Feb. 12, 2022.
The Skyhawks (1-2) have found individual success in all areas this season as the program has racked up five Eastern College Athletic Conference Rider of the Week nods. Sydney Hott has won both fences and flat weekly accolades while Kate Davis is the reigning back-to-back horsemanship Rider of the Week. Also this week, Logan Putvinski nabbed reining Rider of the Week accolades to give UT Martin a representative in all four events so far in 2022-23.
In fences, five different Skyhawks have produced head-to-head victories this fall, led by Julia Gilman's three wins. Hott paces the squad in both MOP's (one) and scoring average (83.0). UT Martin is also responsible for five different victors in fences as the duo of Hott (team-highs of three wins and two MOP's) and Gilman (team-best 83.3 scoring average) have paced the Skyhawks.
Davis' two wins and one MOP in horsemanship are both team-highs as four different UT Martin riders have notched points this season. Paige Benson's 75.3 scoring average in horsemanship leads the way for the Skyhawks. In reining, four separate riders have generated points, led by the pair of Putvinski (team-best three wins, co-team-high of one MOP) and Aubrey Malone (co-team-high of one MOP, team-best 71.0 scoring average).
South Carolina enters the weekend with a 3-1 record as its only loss came on the road to then-No. 3 Texas A&M on Oct. 8. Reining All-American Trinity Hammerschmidt is 4-0 on the season in flat while Natalie Jayne has earned two MOP's in fences. Alexa Thorpe (horsemanship) and Emma Lane (reining) have each secured two MOP's in their respective events this season for three-time national champion head coach Boo Major.
Lynchburg is the defending NCEA single discipline national champion and is currently ranked No. 1 in the country amongst such schools in 2022-23. Hornet head coach Phillip Williamson boasts standouts Emma Schweizer (2-0 record, one MOP), Fallyn Belcastro (2-0 record) and Jacqueline Needle (one MOP) in fences while freshman Abby Zemp is a perfect 2-0 with a MOP award in flat.
