MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad will look for its second straight Ohio Valley Conference road victory when it clashes against the Tennessee State Tigers on Thursday, Jan. 6. The game will be televised on ESPNews and will tip off at 6 p.m.
Last Thursday, the Skyhawks (5-8, 1-0 OVC) soared to a 65-62 triumph in their league opener at Austin Peay. It marked only the sixth time since UT Martin joined the OVC in 1992 that the Skyhawks won a road game to open their conference slate. UT Martin was the only program to snatch a road victory during the first week of OVC play.
KJ Simon seized the third OVC Newcomer of the Week accolade of his junior campaign after collecting game-highs of 26 points and four blocks against the Governors. Bernie Andre (season-bests of 14 points and nine rebounds) and Mikel Henderson (12 points, career-high five assists) also played big down the stretch.
The Skyhawks have won six of the last nine meetings against the Tigers but all three setbacks during that span (since 2014) have come inside the Gentry Center. Tennessee State (5-7, 0-0 OVC) is responsible for a 3-1 record at home this season, outscoring its opponents by 30.3 points per contest.
This game will serve as the Tigers' OVC opener after their first two originally scheduled contests were postponed last week. After a 1-6 start to the season, Tennessee State has won four of its last five decisions with its only loss coming in overtime at South Carolina State on Dec. 18.
Marcus Fitzgerald, Jr. scored a game-high 21 points against UT Martin last season while Carlos Marshall, Jr. (25 points on Jan. 9, 2020), Dedric Boyd (31 points while playing for Eastern Kentucky on Jan. 11, 2018) and Jalen Dupree (20 points, 11 rebounds for Murray State on Feb. 25, 2017) have also had high-scoring performances against the Skyhawks in their careers.
In addition to ESPNews, the game can also be streamed at the link above. Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Brandon Burke (color) will handle the radio broadcasting duties locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. That link, as well as a link for live stats, is located at the top of the webpage.
