
UT MARTIN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CONTINUES ROAD TRIP WITH MATCHUP AT MOREHEAD STATE ON MONDAY

The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will continue its brief road trip through the Bluegrass State with a matchup against Ohio Valley Conference foe Morehead State on Monday, Jan. 24. Tipoff from Ellis T. Johnson Arena is scheduled for 4 p.m. CST and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (4-11, 1-3 OVC) are looking to snap a three-game losing streak and pick up their first win of 2022 after dropping its most recent contest to Murray State (65-49) on Saturday night. Following a 16-day layoff from game action, UT Martin saw its depth challenged with just seven available players against the Racers while facing a hot-shooting opponent which knocked down 56.1 percent of its shot attempts and eight three-pointers.
UT Martin is led offensively by junior guard Paige Pipkin who ranks second in OVC play with 18.5 points per game while scoring in double figures nine times this season. Fellow junior guard Kyannah Grant has also been impressive lately by eclipsing double-digits in six of the last eight contests while averaging 11.2 points per game during the stretch.
Morehead State (1-15, 0-6 OVC) is searching for its first league win under the direction of first-year head coach Cayla Petree. The Eagles are also looking to snap a lengthy 13-game losing streak which dates back to Nov. 24 and first victory against a Division I opponent this season.
The Eagles have relied heavily on transfers Jada Claude (Duke) and Terri Smith (Southeast Missouri) to lead the team in most statistical categories. Claude paces the team with 12.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while tallying three double-doubles on the season. Meanwhile, Smith is averaging 10.4 points along with 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals in her first season for MSU.
Thursday's matchup marks the 56th meeting between the two programs with Morehead State holding a narrow 28-27 advantage over UT Martin in a series which dates back to 1993. The Skyhawks enter the contest riding a four-game winning streak against the Eagles, including back-to-back wins in Morehead by an average of 17.5 points per game.
