
SKYHAWK MEN'S HOOPS TRAVELS TO BLUEGRASS STATE FOR WEDNESDAY OVC TILT AGAINST MOREHEAD STATE

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team will go for its third road win in as many tries in Ohio Valley Conference play when the Skyhawks match up against defending league champion Morehead State on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Tipoff time from Ellis T. Johnson Arena is set for 6 p.m. CST.
UT Martin opened its OVC slate with away victories at Austin Peay (65-62 on Dec. 30) and at Tennessee State (94-78 on Jan. 6), winning its first two conference road contests for the first time since 1987-88. During those contests, the Skyhawks cranked up the intensity on the defensive end, forcing 29 total turnovers to go along with 14 blocked shots and 15 steals.
Last Saturday, UT Martin (6-9, 2-1 OVC) fell by an 81-55 margin to OVC preseason favorite Belmont at home. Chris Nix became the fifth different Skyhawk to lead the squad in scoring this season, pouring in a career-high 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Bernie Andre, who captured OVC Newcomer of the Week accolades on Monday, added 15 points and a team-best six rebounds.
This matchup highlights the league's top two teams in blocked shots as the Eagles rank first with 5.7 rejections per game while UT Martin's 4.7 swats per contest follows closely behind. The Skyhawks boast three of the league's top seven blockers in KJ Simon (1.7 per game, fourth), KK Curry (1.1 per game, sixth) and Nix (1.1 per game, seventh).
Morehead State (10-5, 2-0 OVC) owns the top scoring defense in the OVC at 63.1 points per game allowed, conceding just 52.5 points per contest in its first two league outings. In their 66-55 road win at Austin Peay on Saturday, the Eagles held the host Governors to 6.3 percent (1-of-16) shooting from three-point range.
OVC Co-Preseason Player of the Year Johni Broome, who tops the league in rebounding (10.1 per game) and blocks (3.3 per contest), produced 19 points against Austin Peay as eight Morehead State players registered at least five points.
