
UT MARTIN GOLF SHOWS IMPROVEMENT IN FINAL ROUND OF LONE STAR INVITATIONAL

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad whittled seven strokes off its Round 2 score during the third and final round of the Lone Star Invitational, held at the TPC San Antonio Oaks course.
The Skyhawks carded a 307 (+19) today, wrapping up the season-opening 54-hole tournament with an overall tally of 923 (+59). That placed UT Martin 10th in the final team standings as host UTSA (868, +4) won the event by 12 shots.
Tate Chumley shot even-par through his first 14 holes today before finishing up with a team-best 74 (+2) that included a pair of birdies. Jonathan Xoinis dialed up 16 pars today on his way to a 75 (+3) while Bryson Morrell (78, +6) generated his best round of the tournament. Garrett Chumley (80, +8) completed the team scoring today for the Skyhawks.
Cayden Chambers was the fifth member of UT Martin's lineup as the freshman out of Waverly, Tenn. posted an 83 (+11).
For the tournament, Xoinis finished 18th in the field of 75 golfers with a score of 224 (+8). The redshirt freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn. led the squad in par-4 scoring (4.10, +3 – sixth-best in the tournament), par-5 scoring (5.08, +1), birdies (eight) and pars (34).
Garrett Chumley was one of three Skyhawks to tie for the team lead in par-3 scoring (3.25, +3), tallying a 231 (+15) overall. Tate Chumley (232, +16) and Morrell (241, +25) also tied for the top par-3 scoring average (3.25, +3) on the squad while Morrell also equaled Xoinis for the team lead in par-5 scoring average (5.08, +1). Chambers came away with the second-most birdies on the squad (six) before carding a final score of 245 (+29).
"I'm really pleased with our effort this week," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "It was a great experience for this team and is going to make us better moving forward. Jonathan played steady all week – for this to be his first collegiate event, he played extremely well."
The Skyhawks close out the month of September at the Derek Dolenc Invitational, hosted by SIUE on Sept. 27-28 at Gateway National in Madison, Ill.
