SKYHAWK FOOTBALL HITS THE ROAD FOR NON-CONFERENCE MATCHUP AT NORTHWESTERN STATE

The University of Tennessee at Martin football team hits the road for a non-conference matchup at Southland Conference foe Northwestern State on Saturday, Sept. 18. Kickoff from Turpin Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
This marks the fourth matchup against Northwestern State in series history with UT Martin holding a narrow 2-1 advantage. After splitting the previous home-and-home series back in the mid-60s, the Skyhawks claimed a 42-20 victory in the most recent matchup on Aug. 29, 2019.
The Skyhawks (1-1) are coming off a thrilling comeback 33-27 victory against Samford on Saturday night. After falling behind 17-0 due to five turnovers in the first 16 minutes of the game, UT Martin strung together a stretch which included 26 unanswered points while holding Samford to just one scoring drive in the second half.
Three players racked up Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors as the trio of running back Peyton Logan (Offensive), linebacker D'Carrious Stephens (Defensive) and quarterback Keon Howard (Newcomer) produced big performances in the win. Logan tallied 169 all-purpose yards in the contest along with two long touchdown receptions of 60 and 51 yards, respectively. Stephens ranked second on the team with five tackles but tallied 1.5 tackles for loss and a key interception to seal the team's victory. Meanwhile Howard finished the game with 229 yards passing and 66 yards rushing to tally three total touchdowns.
UT Martin enters the matchup ranked first in the OVC in scoring offense (27.0), total offense (432.5), rushing offense (220.5), rushing defense (73.0), interceptions (3), punting (40.7), PATS kicking (100%), sacks against (0.5/gm), first downs (23.5), third-down conversion (50.0%) and time of possession (38:26) as a team. Individually, the Skyhawks have 23 players ranked in the top-5 of various statistical categories.
Northwestern State (0-2) is looking for the team's first win this season after opening the campaign by dropping back-to-back road games at North Texas (44-14) and Alcorn (13-10). The Demons average 12.0 points per game while averaging 340.5 yards of total offense. Quarterback Kaleb Fletcher is 35-of-53 on the year with 373 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Wide receiver Kendrick Price, Jr. ranks as the team's top playmaker with seven catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Jomard Valsin has a team-high 15 tackles on the season.
