MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball head coach Kevin McMillan has announced the addition of forward Shanice Simpson-Whiteley to the program's 2021 signing class.
Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Simpson-Whiteley is a 6-1 forward who joins the Skyhawks from The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tenn. where she played for head coach Matt Shewmake. She helped the Feet to the program's first TSSAA Division II-A State Championship as a senior while earning all-tournament team honors after averaging 9.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in two games.
She was named to the TN Report All-State team after averaging 12.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game while tallying 10 double-doubles on the season. She was tabbed Tennessean Player of the Week two times after averaging 21.5 points and 15.5 rebounds per game in wins over Battle Ground Academy and Franklin Road Academy while also posting a big effort with 25 points and 20 rebounds against Grace Christian Academy. She was named All-District 3 Tournament MVP along with claiming regular season and tournament honors. She also garnered all-region and all-region tournament accolades.
Prior to attending The Webb School, she played one season at nationally ranked powerhouse Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tenn. which finished the season 25-1 and won the NACA Division I and II national championship before the program ended. She also spent one season at Patrick School in Hillside, New Jersey where she averaged 7.6 points and 6.1 rebounds – while recording a pair of double-doubles – as a sophomore.
"We are excited to add Shanice to our team," McMillan said. "She has a great upside and comes from a strong high school program under Matt Shewmake. She is a state champion that wants to develop her game and wants to be coached. She comes from a great family and fits perfect with our culture."
Simpson-Whiteley becomes the eighth newcomer to the 2021 signing class joining Taylor Dupree (Brandon, Miss.), Holly Forbes (Bonne Terre, Mo.), Mia Hurst (Henderson, Tenn.), Shae Littleford (Charleston, Ill.), Gabi Melby (Naperville, Ill.), Ella Thompson (Bardstown, Ky.) and Tylei Wofford-Byrd (Jonesboro, Ark.) to comprise the 2021 recruiting class.
