MARTIN, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference Beach Volleyball Championship semifinals came down to the final matchup today but the University of Tennessee at Martin came up just short as Austin Peay managed a 3-2 win.
In a battle of the only two unbeatens in the league tournament, the Skyhawks (9-6) held a 2-1 advantage early. After Addison Conley/Jessica Reynolds endured a tough 21-13, 21-17 setback at No. 4, Baillie Kearns/Kambree Lucas got UT Martin on the scoreboard after an impressive 21-16, 14-21, 15-10 triumph at No. 5 over Mimi Arrington/Claire Darland.
The second wave of matchups began on a high note for the Skyhawks as Haeleigh Paulino and Logan Wallick pushed their winning streak to 15 matches with a 21-12, 21-15 victory at No. 3.
However, the Governors (9-8) would come from behind to claim the win after coming out on top in the final two matchups. Lucy Kaufman and Hannah Phillips battled but fell 21-17, 21-18 at No. 1 to even the match at 2-all. The No. 2 slot was the deciding point as Kayla Carrell and Karen Scanlon were defeated by a 21-10, 21-16 margin.
UT Martin is one of the final three teams alive in the hunt for the 2021 OVC beach volleyball title. The Skyhawks will square off against No. 5 seed Jacksonville State at 10 a.m. tomorrow and the victor will advance to take on No. 4 seed Austin Peay in a winner-take-all matchup at 12 p.m.
