MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team left it all on the court today, battling until the very end before Austin Peay escaped with a slim 4-3 win at the Skyhawk Tennis Complex.
UT Martin split the six singles matchups but the Governors took the doubles point to start off the afternoon. The Skyhawk team of Jillian Niedzialowski and Ariadna Ondo were in the middle of a hotly-contested 6-5 decision at No. 2 but the match went unfinished after Austin Peay won 6-2 at No. 1 and 6-3 at No. 3. Amelia Campbell and Jule Streif represented UT Martin at No. 1 while Sina Albersmeier and Mizuki Sakurai were slotted at No. 3 for the Skyhawks.
Campbell came away with arguably UT Martin's most impressive singles win of the 2020-21 campaign, topping Preseason No. 1 ranked Ohio Valley Conference player Fabienne Schmidt by a 6-2, 6-2 margin in the No. 1 slot. Albersmeier gutted her way through a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 triumph at No. 4 while Sakurai made short work of her opponent at No. 5, winning by a 6-3, 6-1 margin.
Ultimately, the Governors would manage wins in the other remaining head-to-head singles matchups. Niedzialowski came close to a win at No. 6 but was edged out, 7-6, 6-3. At No. 2, Streif fell by a 6-2, 6-1 margin while Aziza Aubin was defeated 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.
The Skyhawks will hold Senior Day on Friday, April 2 in the home season finale against Jacksonville State. Seniors Campbell, Sakurai and Streif will each be honored for their career contributions shortly before the match starts at 2 p.m.
