BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference unveiled its beach volleyball postseason honorees today and the University of Tennessee at Martin produced six on the prestigious list. Jaclynn Wilson and Julia Noe were named OVC Co-Coaching Staff of the Year, Logan Wallick and Haeleigh Paulino garnered All-OVC first team status while Karen Scanlon and Kayla Carrell nabbed All-OVC second team titles.
These six Skyhawks become the first in school history to earn OVC postseason beach volleyball awards as the league was formed in 2020 but did not recognize all-conference honorees after last spring's season was shortened.
Despite the fact that the 2021 schedule was abbreviated to 12 regular season matches, Wilson and Noe helped UT Martin shatter just about every school record. The Skyhawks won seven matches – matching the combined win total for the first three seasons of the program – and went 6-4 in league play in 2021, earning the No. 3 seed in the upcoming OVC Championship. UT Martin won 58 percent (29 of 50) of its individual matchups against OVC foes, including a .733 winning percentage in the No. 2 through No. 4 slots in the lineup. The Skyhawks were one of only two OVC teams to defeat No. 2 seed Chattanooga, swept the season series against both Jacksonville State and Eastern Kentucky while adding a pair of victories over Austin Peay.
Wallick and Paulino simply produced the best single season in UT Martin beach volleyball history, generating a flawless 12-0 record this spring. The duo swept the only two OVC Pair of the Week accolades that were awarded this season while going 10-0 at No. 3 and 2-0 out of the No. 4 position. Their 12 single-season victories are three more than any other pair in school history – a feat that was accomplished in 10 less matches than the previous tandem.
Scanlon and Carrell were spotlighted after boasting a 7-5 record while competing exclusively at the No. 2 slot. The duo won four of their first five matches of the season and additionally reeled off a three-match winning streak in the tournament hosted by Eastern Kentucky on April 24-25. Their seven victories are tied for the third-highest tally in single-season history while they own three more wins at No. 2 than any other Skyhawk tandem.
UT Martin is preparing to host the 2021 OVC Championship, which opens tomorrow and runs through Saturday. All matches will be held at the Skyhawk Beach Volleyball Complex.
