MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin battled through three singles tiebreakers and also produced a doubles victory today but it ultimately wasn't enough as Murray State won its fifth straight match, 7-0 at the Skyhawk Tennis Complex.
UT Martin began the match with a doubles win as the No. 1 tandem of Amelia Campbell and Jule Streif defeated the Racers' Sarah Bureau and Sara Loncarevic by a 6-3 margin. However, Murray State took the remaining two matchups to claim the early 1-0 advantage in the match. Sina Albersmeier teamed up with Mizuki Sakurai for an intense battle at No. 3 before the Racers won 7-5. At No. 2, the Skyhawk duo of Jillian Niedzialowski and Ariadna Ondo were defeated 6-0.
Half of the singles decisions came down to three sets as UT Martin showed fight throughout. At No. 6, Niedzialowski battled before falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 while Streif narrowly came up short (6-2, 3-6, 6-2) at No. 2. Campbell also left it all on the court at No. 1 but was forced to retire after a 6-4, 4-6, 2-0 pause in the third set.
Albersmeier kept it close at No. 4 before she was edged by a 6-4, 6-4 margin. Sakurai (6-0, 6-2) and Aziza Aubin (6-3, 6-0) also represented the Skyhawk lineup at No. 5 and No. 3, respectively.
UT Martin now faces a quick turnaround as it plays host to in-state Ohio Valley Conference rival Austin Peay on Saturday, April 3 at 12 p.m.
