MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin returns to the friendly confines of the Skyhawk Tennis Complex for each of its next three Ohio Valley Conference matches, starting with a pair of matchups this weekend. UT Martin hosts Murray State at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 2 before facing Austin Peay at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 3.
The Skyhawks are 23-21 all-time against the Racers, although these two teams haven't met since April 26, 2019 when UT Martin defeated Murray State in the OVC Championship quarterfinals. The Skyhawks own a 27-8 all-time record against the Governors but Austin Peay has won each of the last four decisions, including the 2019 OVC Championship finals.
Amelia Campbell has experienced the most career success against Murray State as she is a perfect 5-0 against the Racers (3-0 singles, 2-0 doubles). Mizuki Sakurai and Daphne Pratt have also each earned a doubles win against Murray State, teaming up together for a victory in the aforementioned 2019 OVC Championship tournament. Against Austin Peay, Campbell (two doubles wins, one singles victory) and Sakurai (one singles win) each own career victories.
On the season, Sina Albersmeier leads UT Martin with four singles victories, competing mostly out of the No. 4 slot. That includes a perfect 2-0 mark in OVC play as the junior out of Moers, Germany has defeated her opponents from Southeast Missouri and Belmont. Aziza Aubin also boasts an OVC victory during the young 2020-21 campaign, posting a win at No. 3 at Belmont last Friday.
Albersmeier and Sakurai are both 5-4 in doubles play to pace the Skyhawks, including a 1-0 mark against league opposition. Campbell and Jule Streif additionally tacked on a doubles victory out of the No. 1 position against OVC foe Belmont.
The Racers (6-6) have won four matches in a row and are one of two 2-0 teams in OVC play, joining Southeast Missouri. Murray State was picked to finish second in the league's preseason poll and boasts Preseason OVC Players to Watch Stasya Sharapova (eight combined wins in 2020-21) and Sara Loncarevic (11 combined victories this season). Sarah Bureau (eight) and Marit Kruegel (seven) top the Racers in singles and doubles wins, respectively.
Tabbed as the OVC preseason favorite was Austin Peay, who enters the weekend with a 5-2 record and 0-1 mark in league play. Three Governors were selected to the OVC's Preseason Player to Watch list in Fabienne Schmidt (team-best 6-1 record in singles and team-high 7-0 mark in doubles), Danielle Morris (three singles victories, 7-0 alongside Schmidt in doubles) and Jana Leder (5-2 mark in singles, four overall wins in doubles).
