HARRINGTON, Del. – Today's equestrian matchup between the University of Tennessee at Martin and Delaware State was about as even as it gets but the host Hornets eked out a raw points tiebreaking victory at the Quillen Arena.
Both sides were even at 9-all so the victor was decided by raw points, which Delaware State claimed by a slim 1,606-1,472.25 margin. It marked the second time this season that the Skyhawks tied their opponent but fell in the tiebreaker – also occurring on Jan. 30 against South Dakota State.
UT Martin claimed a pair of MOP's in Devon Woods (horsemanship) and Haley Kane (flat). Woods collected her team-best third victory of the season in horsemanship behind a season-high 79.5-point effort while Kane's 87 points were six points higher than any other competitor in flat.
The Skyhawks took four of the five points in horsemanship, led by head-to-head victories by Woods (79.5), Bailey Newlin (season-high 77), Lucy Eier (season-best 75.5) and Paige Benson (72.5). Tess Baumann also represented the Skyhawks and collected a score of 65.
In flat, Kane's 87 points led the way while Quinn Reed also recorded a commanding 81-61 victory for her team-high second win on the season. Abbie Hopkins' score of 78 points tied her opponent while Julia Gilman and Mahalia Alascio also tallied scores of 66 and 52, respectively.
Noel Meadows produced a season-high 75.5 points to help pave the way for a UT Martin split in reining. Hannah McDonald ran her season record to a perfect 5-0 after a 73.5-point performance while Baumann's 71.5 points were good enough for a tie. Maggie Malone scored a career-best 73 points but was edged by 0.5 points while Erin Bledsoe was responsible for a score of 67.
Reed generated the Skyhawks' lone win in fences as the senior from Batavia, Ohio soared to her second win of the day behind a score of 81 points. UT Martin's fences lineup additionally included Hopkins (77), Alascio (74), Grace Rogers (55) and Gilman (no score).
UT Martin wraps up the 2020-21 regular season on Friday, March 12 when it hosts the same Delaware State squad at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion. The competition, which will serve as Senior Day for the Skyhawks, is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
