BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin went back on the road on Monday as the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers handed the Skyhawks a 7-0 setback at the WKU Tennis Complex.
UT Martin was in contention to take the No. 2 doubles matchup as Jillian Niedzialowski and Ariadna Ondo were in a 5-4 showdown. However, the match went unfinished after the Skyhawk pairings of Aziza Aubin/Jule Streif (6-1) and Sina Albersmeier/Mizuki Sakurai (6-2) fell at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.
Western Kentucky took the momentum from the opening point in to singles play. Representing UT Martin out of the No. 1 slot for the first time all season was Streif, who was outlasted in a three-set tiebreaker (7-5, 5-7, 6-10). Albersmeier fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 while Sakurai was defeated 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Ondo played at No. 5 and fell 6-1, 6-3 while Aubin (6-3, 6-0 at No. 2) and Niedzialowski (6-2, 6-1 at No. 6) also ran into some tough luck.
The Skyhawks return home for a season-long three-match homestand against Ohio Valley Conference rivals. Two of those matches take place this week as UT Martin hosts Murray State at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 2 and Austin Peay at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 3.
