
SKYHAWK EQUESTRIAN SET TO HOST INAUGURAL EASTERN COLLEGE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP THIS WEEK

MARTIN, Tenn. – Five teams will compete for the first-ever Eastern College Athletic Conference equestrian title this week at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin. The three-day event is closed to outside spectators with the exception of fans on the complimentary team pass list.
Four meets will take place from March 25-27 in one indoor arena. The tournament begins on Thursday with a 10 a.m. quarterfinal matchup featuring No. 4 seed Delaware State and No. 5 seed UC Davis.
The winner of the quarterfinal will advance to take on No. 1 seed SMU while No. 2 seed South Dakota State will also take on No. 3 seed UT Martin on Friday. Those competitions will start at 9:30 a.m.
Friday's victors will meet to determine the 2021 ECAC champion on Saturday as the tournament finals will begin at 10 a.m.
SMU earned the top seed after going 6-1 during the 2020-21 regular season. Coached by Carol Gwin, the Mustangs are currently ranked fourth in the NCEA top-10 poll and have won four straight decisions heading into the postseason. SMU garnered a league-high nine ECAC Rider of the Week accolades this spring.
Coached by Morgan DiGuilio, South Dakota State nabbed the No. 2 seed in the ECAC Championship field after posting a 3-2 overall record this season. The Jackrabbits closed out the regular season on a three-meet winning streak and were ranked in the national top-10 polls twice this month.
Seeded No. 3, the Skyhawks are 2-4 this season with two of those setbacks coming on raw points tiebreakers. Five different UT Martin riders have earned ECAC Rider of the Week or Rider of the Month accolades in 2020-21. Kim Leiter is in her first season as interim head coach after spending six years as a Skyhawk assistant coach.
Delaware State comes into the week with a 3-3 overall record, winning three of its final five matchups of the regular season to tally the No. 4 seed. The Hornets are coming off a second-place ECAC finish in 2019-20, leading to the ECAC Coach of the Year award for Jennifer Ridgely.
Currently ranked No. 9 nationally, UC Davis is the fifth seed in the ECAC Championship. The Aggies are responsible for a 1-3 record this season, facing ranked opposition in all four meets. Head coach Jessie Weisinger has presided over six ECAC Rider of the Week honorees this spring.
