UT MARTIN TO COMPETE AT THE OVC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP ON MONDAY AFTERNOON
2/26/2021 4:48:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2020-21 Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championship will be ran on Monday, March 1 at the Weakley Park in Clarksville, Tennessee. The women's 5K race will begin at noon with the men's 8k race following at 12:45 p.m.
It marks the first time Austin Peay has hosted the event since 2006. Due to COVID-19 protocols, there will be no fans permitted at the Championship this year.
Originally scheduled for November, the event was delayed to the spring. OVC cross country teams have run an abbreviated season in January/February. There will be no NCAA Regional events this year; instead teams will be selected for at-large spots in this year's NCAA Championship, which will be held in Stillwater, Oklahoma on March 15.
This will be the 60th OVC men's championship, as the first one was held in 1962. UT Martin, under the direction of second-year head coach Kevin Mangan, has finished in the top half at the OVC Championship in each of the past four seasons. The Skyhawk men enter the Championship ranked ninth in the South Region with two team titles under their belt.
Senior Ryan Ford has claimed a pair of OVC Male Runner of the Week honors this season behind event titles at the SEMO Redhawks XC Invite and Golden Eagle Invitational. In his most recent meet, he posted a staggering time of 22:41.8 to best the field by over 38 seconds. The Skyhawks will also look for a mixture of Oisin O'Gailin, John Green, Luke McNair, Alex Schell (2019 All-OVC) and Daniel Smith (2019 All-OVC) to compete for scoring positions.
The women's championship will be determined for the 42nd time this year. Sophomore Erica Fisher has led the Skyhawks in all three meets this season while posting two top-10 finishes with her best time coming at the SEMO Redhawks XC Invite with a 5k time of 18:39.1 after earning All-OVC honors last year. Taylor Roy has consistently ranked second on the team while posting a PR of her own at the Redhawks XC Invite at 18:49.0 while Annie Amundsen, Breanna Roy and Maggie Medley project to round out the scoring five.
All awards, including the OVC Athletes and Freshmen of the Year (which are determined by coaches vote), will be announced at the conclusion of the race on Monday.
