MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad puts the finishing touches on the 2020-21 season on Saturday, Feb. 27 when it squares off against Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Illinois. Tipoff time from Lantz Arena in Charleston, Ill. is set for 4 p.m.
The Skyhawks (7-16, 5-14 OVC) have won each of the last two meetings against the Panthers and with a win in the season finale, UT Martin will have swept the season series for the first time since the 2014-15 campaign.
In the first meeting between these two squads on Jan. 28, the Skyhawks put together a record-setting defensive performance in a 51-41 victory. The 41 points allowed were the fewest by any UT Martin team against a NCAA Division I opponent in school history. The Skyhawks limited Eastern Illinois to 28.1 percent shooting (16-of-57), including a 3-for-24 effort (12.5 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.
Jaron Williams accumulated a game-high 17 points during last month's matchup against the Panthers while UT Martin also received boosts out of Vinnie Viana (11 points) and Ajani Kennedy (career-best 14 rebounds).
Eastern Illinois (9-17, 6-13 OVC) is coming off a tough 94-88 home setback to Southeast Missouri on Thursday, a loss that knocked the Panthers out of OVC Tournament consideration. Mack Smith scored a team-best 22 points for Eastern Illinois, who led for nearly 25 minutes but allowed 12 three-pointers.
Senior guard Marvin Johnson has cemented a reputation as one of the OVC's top all-around players. In league play, he ranks first in steals (2.1 per game), second in assists (5.2 per contest) and third in scoring (17.0 points per game). He is one of just three players (joining Eastern Kentucky's Tre King and Murray State's Tevin Brown) to rank in the OVC's top-15 overall in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals.
Fans can watch the game live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will have the radio call locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link to live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
