MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team enters a crucial final week of the season with a road matchup against the SIUE Cougars on Thursday, Feb. 25. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks enter the last three days of the 2020-21 regular season looking to leap over their next two opponents for a spot into next week's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
Facing a must-win situation, UT Martin (7-15, 5-13 OVC) will take the Vadalabene Center floor on a five-game winning streak in road games against SIUE, having not lost to the Cougars in Edwardsville since 2015. Since the Skyhawks joined the OVC in 1992, the program has not won any more than five consecutive road games against any of their 13 current or former league opponents, last accomplishing that feat at Tennessee State from 2001-05.
Although UT Martin leads the all-time series against the Cougars by a 14-10 margin, SIUE has won each of the last two contests - including a 76-60 decision at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center back on Jan. 30. In that game, Skyhawk freshman Anthony Thomas went off for a career-best 24 points while Jaron Williams added 13 points and a career-high six rebounds but UT Martin was held to a 16.7 percent shooting performance from beyond the three-point arc (4-of-24).
The Cougars (8-15, 6-11 OVC) are 1-7 at home this season and enter the contest on a five-game slide as they are near the end of a grueling 18-games-in-38-days stretch to close out the regular season.
Despite playing its second straight game without leading scorer Sidney Wilson, SIUE nearly upset the OVC's second-place team in Morehead State on Monday. The Cougars led for a large portion of the second half before the two sides were knotted at 44-all going into the final media timeout. However, SIUE was outscored 12-4 over the final 3:32.
