2/19/2021 2:01:00 PM | Volleyball
MARTIN, Tenn. – The highly anticipated University of Tennessee at Martin 2020-21 home volleyball opener will take place on Sunday, Feb. 21 as the Skyhawks clash against Eastern Illinois at 6 p.m. UT Martin will turn around and face the same Panther squad on Monday, Feb. 22 at 2:15 p.m.
The Skyhawks were originally scheduled to open the home season on Feb. 14 against Belmont but the matches were postponed because of travel issues concerning inclement weather. As a result, UT Martin will be back in action for the first time since splitting the season-opening weekend at Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 7-8.
During the 2019 season, the Skyhawks swept Eastern Illinois in a pair of 3-0 decisions (25-20, 25-16, 25-17 in Martin, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 in Charleston). UT Martin combined to hit .284 in the two victories, including a .360 attack percentage (46 kills against 14 errors in 89 swings) in the home win.
Several Skyhawks have found sustained success in their careers against the Panthers. Logan Wallick topped UT Martin in kills in both matches last season, posting 3.33 kills per set on a .275 hitting percentage. Karen Scanlon has hit .405 with 20 kills in four career matches against Eastern Illinois while Kenzie Hinshaw (197 assists, 8.57 per set) has earned a pair of double-doubles against the Panthers.
The Skyhawks lead the Ohio Valley Conference with 18.22 digs per set as Dylan Mott (4.00 per set), Scanlon (3.89) and Baillie Kearns (3.11) each had stellar opening weekends. Additionally shining defensively was Zoe Merriweather, who is tied for the OVC lead with 1.20 blocks per set.
Eastern Illinois (0-4) is in search of its first win of the 2020-21 campaign after falling twice at home to Morehead State during the first week of the season before two losses at Tennessee Tech this past weekend. Laurel Bailey (3.0 kills per set) and Bailey Chandler (8.07 assists per set) pace the Panther offense while the defense has been shored up by Ashley Sharkus (2.57 digs per set) and Danielle Allen (0.92 blocks per set).
