SKYHAWK EQUESTRIAN TO HOLD HOME OPENER THIS FRIDAY AGAINST MINNESOTA-CROOKSTON

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team will host an opponent in the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex for the first time in nearly a year when it welcomes in Minnesota-Crookston on Friday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m.
Friday will be the first home competition for the Skyhawks since a 9-1 victory over SUNY New Paltz on Feb. 21, 2020. UT Martin is 6-0 all-time against Minnesota-Crookston but has not faced the Golden Eagles since the 2017-18 season.
The Skyhawks officially opened their 2020-21 campaign two weeks ago with three road/neutral site competitions. UT Martin took on stiff competition to the tune of No. 8 TCU (lost 15-4), South Dakota State (tied 8-8 but lost the raw points tiebreaker) and No. 5 SMU (lost 15-5).
During their season-opening swing through Texas, the Skyhawks displayed balance as each event collected at least four wins. UT Martin enjoyed the most success in flat as the squad accounted for five head-to-head wins and a pair of MOP's. Mahalia Alascio earned a team-high two victories and tallied one MOP while Abbie Hopkins also brought home an MOP accolade. Julia Gilman and Quinn Reed also have one win apiece during the early portion of the season.
Tess Baumann was responsible for the Skyhawks' other MOP during the opening week, as she claimed top status in horsemanship against South Dakota State on Jan. 30. She is one of four UT Martin riders to chalk up a victory in that event so far this season, joining Bailey Newlin, Lucy Eier and Devon Woods.
In reining, Hannah McDonald is a perfect 3-0 against top competition on the season. Noel Meadows also generated one victory and boasts a team-high 71.0 scoring average in the event.
Gilman has registered a pair of victories in fences and also leads the Skyhawks with an 81.7 scoring average. Hopkins and Reed additionally came away with wins in the event against No. 5 SMU on Jan. 30.
