MARTIN, Tenn. – Less than 24 hours after it had a game cancelled at Evansville, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program added another Missouri Valley Conference opponent to its schedule. The Skyhawks will travel to Des Moines, Iowa tomorrow for a 2 p.m. matchup against the Drake Bulldogs.
With this announcement, UT Martin will play in the Hawkeye State for the first time in a quarter-century. The Skyhawks last played in Iowa on Dec. 5, 1996 when they took on Iowa State in the Cyclone Challenge in Ames. This game came about on Saturday afternoon after UT Martin's regularly scheduled outing at Evansville was cancelled on Friday evening. On the flipside, Drake was originally scheduled to host Chicago State on Sunday but that was game was also postponed.
On Tuesday, the Skyhawks posted their most complete victory of the 2021-22 season with a 79-68 home triumph over UNC Asheville. KJ Simon (career-best 30 points), Bernie Andre (season-high 14 points in 22 minutes) and Chris Nix (first UT Martin double-double of 12 points, 10 rebounds) boosted UT Martin offensively.
On the defensive end, the Skyhawks limited the Bulldogs to 39.7 percent shooting as UNC Asheville's 68 points were the lowest for a UT Martin NCAA Division I opponent this season.
KK Curry (12.9 points per game, team-best 6.3 rebounds per outing) and Simmons (10.1 points per contest, OVC-high .846 free throw percentage) join Simon to give the Skyhawks three players who average double figures scoring.
Coming off a 26-5 campaign that included a NCAA Tournament first-round victory last season, the Bulldogs are off to a 7-5 start (including a perfect 6-0 record at home) in 2021-22. Drake is coming off back-to-back overtime games, falling 90-80 to Clemson on Dec. 11 before bouncing back five days later for a 70-65 triumph over Jackson State.
Two-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year Darian DeVries oversees a balanced Bulldog roster that boasts six players who average between 9.2 and 13.5 points per contest.
