MARTIN, Tenn. – Haley Kane and Logan Putvinski nabbed MOP accolades for the University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian squad today but the No. 4 ranked Texas A&M Aggies handed the Skyhawks a narrow 12-8 loss at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
The MOP honors were the first in the career of Kane (fences) and Putvinski (reining) in those respective events as UT Martin was embroiled in a tight battle throughout the day. The Skyhawks dominated the reining portion – collecting four wins in five tries – and edged out Texas A&M in fences (3-2). However, the Aggies nabbed all five points in horsemanship and held a 4-1 advantage in flat.
UT Martin was a half-point shy of sweeping the reining event. Putvinski's score of 72.5 was a career-high as the freshman out of Knoxville, Tenn. secured her second straight victory of the 2021-22 campaign. Kate Davis matched Putvinski's team-best score of 72.5 as she earned her fourth win of the season. Coming through for their first career victories was Rachel Davis (69) and Shelby Jackson (64.5) while Maggie Malone produced a solid 72 but fell by 0.5 points.
In fences, Haley Kane's 84-point effort was six points better than her head-to-head competitor as the junior from Lexington, Ky. established a new career-high score in that event. Julia Gilman generated her third victory of the season with a 79-point performance while Kelby Kane's 76 points was good enough for her team-best fifth win of the season. Tyler Anderson (77 points) and Elizabeth Becker (no score) also represented the Skyhawks in the event.
Gilman was the lone UT Martin member to garner points in flat as the Barrington, Ill. native strolled to her fourth consecutive win behind a 77-point ride. Anderson ran into some tough luck after a team-high 78 points came against the MOP performer from Texas A&M. Kelby Kane (65.5), Haley Kane (63.5) and Mahalia Alascio (59.5) completed the Skyhawks' scoring lineup.
UT Martin was responsible for respectable scores in horsemanship but could not find any momentum. Paige Benson piled up a career-best score of 76.5 points and was followed closely behind by Lexi Bailey (career-high 74), Katelyn Schultz (career-best 73.5), Keely Seiter (73.5) and Kate Davis (72).
The Skyhawks conclude their fall docket tomorrow when they take on Lynchburg in a 10 a.m. meet that will only include Jumping Seat events (fences and flat).
