MARTIN, Tenn. – Nearly 24 hours away from the penultimate match of what's been an incredibly-accomplished fall campaign, the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team will honor four remarkable seniors on Thursday night in the final home stand of the regular season, going head-to-head with the Belmont Bruins at 7:00 p.m. from Skyhawk Field. In what will be a highly-anticipated duel between the two highest schools in the current Ohio Valley Conference standings, UTM (9-4-1) will look to build off the success of their previous appearance on Sunday, a 2-1 second-half shutout over last season's OVC champion Murray State.
Goalkeeper Erica Myers, defender Kamryn Chappell, and the midfield tandem of Hendrikje Baurmann and Skylar Boes will all be honored during a pregame Senior Night ceremony for their immense contributions to the UT Martin soccer program, gathering a grand total of 44 victories since 2017 alongside a league championship in '18.
While the Skyhawks have gotten the better of the Bruins in three of the last four meetings between the two schools, the visitors from Nashville will enter Thursday's bout in the closing stages of an overachieving season, hitting a 4-2 conference record despite being picked 5th by the league in the preseason poll. Coincidentally, UTM has also greatly exceeded what were already high expectations this fall, defeating all three teams projected ahead of them following the one-goal triumph over the Racers.
Belmont entered last weekend knotted up with the Skyhawks at the top of the OVC standings, although a 1-0 upset at the hands of Eastern Illinois keeps the Bruins at 12 points while the navy and orange jolted to 15. Awaiting Thursday's slate of games in the league, SIUE sits tied with Belmont for 2nd place while Tennessee Tech holds down the 4th place spot with 10 points.
Not one of the more imposing teams in the conference offensively at just 14 goals in as many appearances, the Bruins have been most efficient on the other side of the field, reaching five shutout wins in 2021 with four of them coming against league opponents. Belmont has been dreadful away from home this semester, gaining only one win outside of Nashville in seven attempts.
Thursday's tussle against an in-state foe will represent the final home appearance for Myers, Chappell, Baurmann, and Boes, competing one last time on a field where they have captured 26 wins over the past four+ years. The Skyhawks hold a slim 11-10 edge in the all-time series against the Bruins, while head coach Phil McNamara has enjoyed a 7-3 record when battling Belmont since taking over the program in 2010.
Makin a strong case for the title of most accomplished goalie in the 23-year history of UTM soccer, Myers ranks inside the top five in six major categories among all Skyhawks since 1998. Seeing more time in the net than any other Skyhawk GK (7,105 minutes), Myers' 79 appearances in the net have amounted to 39 individual victories (2nd in school history), 21 shutouts (tied for 1st in school history), and 314 saves, one of only two players to suit up for UTM to surpass the 300-save threshold. Selected as the OVC Goalkeeper of the Week on six separate occasions, Myers' career goals-against average of 1.24 places 5th in school history, entering Thursday with .089 in that statistic for this season, the fourth-lowest in a single year among any Skyhawk. Accumulating a .762 save percentage over her five-year tenure, Myers has posted a double-digit save count on three different occasions, the highest being 13 in the 2019 season-opener against Arkansas State. The graduate student finished one shy of that mark last September in a road trip to Arkansas, totaling 52 saves in 14 matches this season. A native of Holland, Ohio, Myers was named to the 2018 All-OVC First Team next to a Second Team mention two seasons later, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy in the final chapters of her collegiate career.
Joining Myers as a fifth-year player to be honored on Thursday evening, Chappell winds down her UTM regime with 7,374 minutes and counting to her resume. Starting 79 out of 83 appearances as a constant figure in the Skyhawks' fearsome defensive back line, the 2017 All-OVC Newcomer Team member has been a staple of 21 shutouts since joining the program, leading all teammates in minutes played this year. Running the field for all but 11 minutes out of a possible 1,300 in 2021, Chappell was awarded the conference's Defensive Player of the Week nod for the first time in her career earlier this month. Primarily handling duties denying the opposition, Chappell secured her first goal in 2018 vs. Jacksonville State, while assisting on the game-winning shot the previous year in the 107th minute against SIUE. A product of Flushing, Michigan, the graduate student has aided the navy and orange to one of the most persistent defensive outputs of any UTM season this fall.
One of three foreigners on the 2021 edition of the roster, Baurmann has given the Skyhawks another scoring and passing threat during her time under coach McNamara's tutelage, starting 21 of 59 appearances over four years. Behind 2,367 total minutes with two matches remaining on this season's schedule, the senior midfielder saw a season-best 14 points as a sophomore in 2019, reaching all five of her career scores and four of her nine assists during that period. The recipient of two game-winning strikes against OVC opponents Belmont and Austin Peay, Baurmann saw a career-best two-goal output in the latter matchup with the Governors two years back. A native of Beermusch, Germany, Baurmann rides out her senior season having already been featured on the conference Commissioner's Honor Roll twice.
The final senior of the four to be recognized on Thursday, Boes has brought another level of leadership and experience to a roster crammed to the brim with such attributes this fall. Hailing from Haubstadt, Indiana, Boes has competed in 42 matches since 2018 for a total of 830 minutes. It will be a poetic Senior Night ceremony for the fourth-year performer, who saw her most memorable outing against the Bruins this past spring, scoring the game's only goal in that road affair last March that served as the 75th-minute game-winner. Boes tabbed her first career assist in the 2019 regular season finale against Jacksonville State as well, landing on the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll as a junior last semester.
First touch from Skyhawk Field is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night, streamed live via ESPN+. Dating back to the shortened spring campaign, UTM has emerged victorious in nine out of their last ten regular season contests against league opponents, hoping to send their sensational senior quartet out in style.
