MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin goes for its third victory in the last five days when it plays host to Ohio Valley Conference opponent SIUE on Saturday, Jan. 30. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is set for 4 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's basketball contest.
The Skyhawks lead the all-time series against the Cougars by a 14-9 margin and have won eight of the last 10 matchups since the 2016-17 season. However, both losses during that span have come at home, including a 90-75 setback the last time these two teams met last February.
UT Martin (5-9, 3-7 OVC) has won back-to-back games to start its season-long six-game homestand. The Skyhawks clamped down defensively against Eastern Illinois on Thursday, conceding the fewest points (41) against a NCAA Division I opponent in school history. The 28.1 percent defensive field goal percentage against the Panthers was the best for a UT Martin squad against a Division I foe since holding Southeast Missouri to 27.5 percent shooting in a 66-55 road win on Feb. 4, 2006 - a span of 465 games.
A pair of juniors have stepped up recently for the Skyhawks as Jaron Williams (18.5 points per game) and Vinnie Viana (11.5 points per game) have shined during UT Martin's two-game winning streak. Viana tops the OVC in three-point field goal percentage (.529) in league play while Williams' 50.0 percent clip from downtown ranks third.
After a 34-day layoff because of COVID-19 protocols, SIUE (5-6, 3-2 OVC) is in the midst of a 19-game stretch in 37 days to close out the regular season. The Cougars suffered a heartbreaking 64-62 road setback at Southeast Missouri on Thursday. SIUE led by as many as 13 points in the second half and did not trail until a pair of Redhawk free throws with 0.5 seconds remaining. UConn transfer Sidney Wilson poured in a game-high 23 points for the Cougars, who were forced into 21 turnovers.
