UT MARTIN AND BELMONT MEET ON TUESDAY NIGHT FOR OVC WOMEN’S HOOPS CLASH
1/25/2021 4:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball
A clash of the Ohio Valley Conference's top programs of the last decade will hold its first showdown of the season Tuesday, Jan. 26 when the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team plays host to Belmont. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+.
Tuesday's matchup pits two of the OVC's most dominant programs over the past decade. UT Martin has won five regular season championships (2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2019-20) while Belmont has won four (2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20) over the past 10 seasons.
The Skyhawks (7-3, 6-1 OVC) open its longest homestand in nearly two decades, playing six straight games in the Elam Center for the first time since the 2003-04 campaign. UT Martin enters Tuesday's contest riding a five-game winning streak after a weekend sweep of the Death Valley road swing with wins over Eastern Kentucky (65-39) and Morehead State (80-63). The road warriors have been dominant on the road with five wins while posting an average margin of victory totaling 15.0 points in league play.
UT Martin is led offensively by senior forward Chelsey Perry who leads the country with 28.4 points per game while ranking as one of just two players nationally to have scored 20 points or more in every contest this season. Last week she flirted with a double-double, averaging 25.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while tallying eight blocks in the two victories. Also posting a big week on the road was sophomore forward Dasia Young who averaged 15.0 points and 4.5 rebounds – including a career-high 22-point performance against Morehead State.
Belmont (6-3, 3-1 OVC) returned to action last week with three contests after a lengthy layoff of nearly a month by dropping its first game back to Murray State (72-66) before rattling off back-to-back victories against Eastern Illinois (63-49) and SIUE (69-57). The Bruins boast three players in double figures led by Destinee Wells (13.3 ppg, 4.1 apg) while Conley Chinn (11.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and Tuti Jones (11.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg) round out the group.
This matchup marks the 38th meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1969 with Belmont holding a 24-13 advantage. In the last 18 meetings, the two programs have both won exactly nine games each while UT Martin won the lone matchup last season on Jan. 11, 2020 by a score of 74-57.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will be on the call locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link for live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
