The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will put its four-game winning streak to the test with a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference foe Morehead State on Saturday, Jan. 23 to put a wrap on a road swing through the Blue Grass State. Tipoff from Elliot T. Johnson Arena is scheduled for noon CST and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (6-3, 5-1 OVC) enter Saturday's contest riding a season-long four-game winning streak while sitting atop the OVC standings. UT Martin is coming off an impressive defensive effort at Eastern Kentucky in which the team limited the Colonels to just 39 points – including 14 points in the second half. The contest marked just the seventh time in the program's Division I history that UT Martin had held an opponent to fewer than 40 points.
UT Martin has fared well on the road in league play this season by boasting a 3-1 mark. The road warriors have posted an average margin of victory of 16.2 points in their four contests. Saturday's contest marks the team's fourth game played in the Commonwealth of Kentucky this season – doubling its total games played by the Skyhawks in their home state of Tennessee to date.
Senior forward Chelsey Perry enters the contest leading the country in scoring by averaging 28.4 points per game while also ranking as one of just two players nationally to have scored 20 points or more in every game this season. After being named Madness National Mid-Major Player of the Week earlier this week, Perry moved into third place on the program's all-time scoring list by passing Mary Kate Long with 1,761 career points.
Morehead State (5-8, 4-5 OVC) is riding a hot hand into Saturday's matchup with three straight victories after a season-sweep against SIUE last week and a thrilling 58-57 home victory against Southeast Missouri on Thursday night. The Eagles boast the nation's best paint protectors by leading the country in blocked shots with 102 and second in blocked shots per game with 7.8.
The Eagles are led by the sophomore pair of Gabby Crawford and Ariel Kirkwood. Crawford leads the team with 11.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game while Kirkwood ranks close behind with 11.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. The duo also plays a big role on the defensive side as Kirkwood ranks fourth nationally with 40 blocks and Crawford ranks 16th with 29.
The two programs have met 56 previous times in a series which dates back to 1993 with Morehead State holding a 28-24 advantage. UT Martin has won the last two meetings – including an 82-64 victory on Feb. 1, 2020 which marked the Skyhawks first win in Johnson Arena since 2016.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will be on the call locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link for live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
