MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field program will return to action this weekend to jump start a loaded 2021 campaign.
After narrowly squeaking through the indoor portion of the track and field schedule last season before seeing the outdoor schedule canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Skyhawks are primed for a strong showing under head coach Jolyta Henderson.
UT Martin will compete in four indoor meets beginning with the season opener at the KMS Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 24 in Birmingham, Ala. The Skyhawks will also participate in the Redhawk Invite (Friday, Feb. 5), EIU Friday Night (Friday, Feb. 19) and the Redhawks Open (Saturday, Feb. 20) to round out their indoor slate.
Due to timing and structural challenges associated with the Indoor Track and Field Championships, the OVC Council of Directors of Athletics recommended and the OVC Board of Presidents supported not holding a conference championship this year. The action did not preclude any interested institutions from competing in regular season indoor track and field events.
Shifting to the outdoor season, UT Martin will make its debut at a familiar venue competing at the Margaret Simmons Invite on March 26-27 in Murray, Ky. The Skyhawks will also go head to head at another OVC venue when traveling into the Show Me State to take part at the Joey Haines Invite on Apr. 2-3 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The Skyhawks will then head to Nashville to take part in the Black and Gold Invite hosted by Vanderbilt on Apr. 16-17 before using the Memphis Invite on Apr. 30-May 1 as the squad's final season tune-up.
UT Martin will put its season preparations to the test for league medalist honors at the OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships running from May 13-15 in Charleston, Ill.
