UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS FLIPS ATTENTION TO HOME MATCHUP AGAINST MURRAY STATE ON SATURDAY
1/15/2021 6:26:00 PM | Women's Basketball
After enduring nearly a year long wait to play in front of the home fans of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center, the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will now have the privilege of playing on its home court for the second time in less than 48 hours when playing host to Ohio Valley Conference foe Murray State on Saturday, Jan. 16. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (4-3, 3-1 OVC) played its first home game in the Elam Center of the 2020-21 season on Thursday night when hosting Austin Peay and put on a show for the home supporters – coasting to a 69-53 victory. With the victory, UT Martin improved to 117-25 (82.3 percent) on Pat Summitt Court since the 2010-11 campaign while boasting an 83-11 (88.3 percent) mark against OVC opponents during the span.
UT Martin's All-OVC duo of Chelsey Perry and Maddie Waldrop combined for 53 of the team's 69 points in its last contest. The combination marked the first time in over a calendar year that the Skyhawks had two players score over 20 points in the same game.
Perry – fresh off picking up her 11th career OVC Player of the Week honor – posted her fourth double-double of the season with 32 points and 11 rebounds. Her big night included tying the program's career block record of 203 while moving into fifth place on the program's career scoring list at 1,703 points. The game also continued a streak of seven straight games with 20 points or more for Perry, joining an exclusive club which includes just three players in the NCAA that have scored at least 20 points in every game this season.
Waldrop posted her best game of the season with 21 points and six rebounds in the contest. The game served as the 35th double-figure outing for the Murray, Ky. native and eighth 20-point performance of her career.
Murray State (5-5, 2-3 OVC) has alternated wins and losses over its past five contests while dropping its most recent outing on the road at Southeast Missouri, 69-53, on Thursday night. The Racers struggled in the contest, shooting just 27.5 percent from the floor and 25.0 percent from beyond the arc.
The Racers are led offensively by a pair of players who have left their mark on the OVC landscape in four-time OVC Freshman of the Week Katelyn Young and All-OVC guard Macey Turley. Young ranks in the OVC's top-10 in both points (fourth, 15.5 ppg) and rebounds (first, 9.1 rpg) while Turley sits eighth in points (14.0 ppg) and ninth in assists (3.2 apg).
Saturday's contest marks the 92nd meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1970 with UT Martin holding a sizable 56-35 advantage. The Skyhawks enter the game boasting a four-game winning streak against the Racers – including an 88-33 win in the OVC Basketball Championship quarterfinals last season – while winning nine of the last 10 meetings.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will be on the call locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link for live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
