BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin sits in sixth place out of 12 teams in the race for the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Cup, the league announced today.
The Skyhawks' best finish in the OVC Commissioner's Cup standings came in 2011-12, when UT Martin placed seventh. The Skyhawks' most points (89) in a single academic year occurred during the 2016-17 campaign.
UT Martin has tallied 62 points through the league's winter championships, ranking behind Southeast Missouri (80.75), Murray State (75), Belmont (68.5), Eastern Illinois (68) and Eastern Kentucky (66). Trailing UT Martin is Austin Peay (58), Jacksonville State (48.5), Morehead State (48.5), Tennessee Tech (46.5), SIUE (38.75) and Tennessee State (34.75).
Leading the way for the Skyhawks is the 2019-20 OVC regular season champion women's basketball team, who has accumulated 11.5 points. UT Martin also received contributions from its rifle (3), men's basketball (2.5) and men's indoor track (1.5) programs this winter, joining football (10), soccer (10), men's cross country (nine), women's cross country (eight) and volleyball (6.5) from the fall semester.
The OVC unveils updated Commissioner's Cup standings at the conclusion of the fall and winter championship seasons. The final results are released following the spring championship season. For most sports, the first-place team earns 12 points, the second-place team earns 11 points, etc. For rifle, men's indoor track, men's outdoor track and beach volleyball (which do not have eight participating teams), the first-place team earns 12 points and each subsequent place earns points less than the total of number of teams in the OVC divided by the number of teams that sponsor that sport.
Implemented in 2008-09, the OVC Commissioner's Cup is a symbol of overall athletic excellence in conference-sponsored championships and is awarded annually to one member institution. Schools are required to count point totals for four main sports (football, volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball) along with their next eight highest point totals from the remaining sports, regardless of gender.
