Martin, Tenn. - Anticipation for junior right-hand pitcher Nick Wohlbold's 2020 season is at an all-time high as he is recognized as one of best for the second time in two days. Wohlbold has already been slated as one of the best in the country with his nomination to the preseason All-American list, so it only makes sense that the conference would follow.Â
The Ohio Valley Conference just released the All-OVC preseason team, where Wohlbold is the only relief pitcher nominated. This nomination comes at the heels of his 2019 performance in which he was named second-team All-OVC. Wohlbold led the conference in saves at 13 with the closest total behind him being 10. His sophomore year was indeed a breakout season as he hit career highs in all categories and improved his ERA from 12.54 to 3.03.
Outside of his in-game accolades, Wohlbold has already been honored twice by the OVC for his academics. In both his freshmen and sophomore campaigns, Wohlbold earned his spot on the OVC Commissioners Honor Roll. His success in the classroom and the diamond showcases his ability to improve as he strives for a first-team selection in 2020.Â
As one of the leading proponents of the 2019 team, he will have to take on a new role with a young core. So the possibilities for the preseason All-American/All-OVC closer are endless. Regardless, this season will prove to be exciting, especially whenever Wohlbold hits the mound. The Skyhawks and Wohlbold will get their first chance at success Feb. 14 when they head to Mobile, Ala. to take on St. Louis University.Â
