BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Parker Stewart, a sophomore guard on the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team, has nabbed Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week honors for the fifth time during the 2019-20 campaign.
With today's announcement, Stewart joins two-time All-American Lester Hudson as the only players in Skyhawk history to claim five OVC Newcomer of the Week accolades. Stewart also won the award on Nov. 18, Nov. 25, Dec. 2 and Jan. 13.
The 6-5, 200-pound combo guard logged all 80 minutes for UT Martin this week, averaging 25.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals in a pair of road outings. Stewart sank 44.7 percent (17-for-38) of his field goal attempts and was responsible for an 81.3 percent effort (13-of-16) from the charity stripe.
Stewart equaled his career-high scoring total of 33 points on Saturday at Morehead State, grabbing eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. With that performance, he became only the third player in the school's Division I history to score at least 30 points four different times in a single season (joining Lester Hudson in 2007-08, 2008-09 and Michael Hart in 1995-96).
Two days earlier at Eastern Kentucky, Stewart collected 18 points, eight rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
On the season, Stewart ranks second in the OVC in scoring (20.3 points per game), second in three-point field goals made (2.9 per contest), second in minutes played (36.5 per outing) and 10th in assists (3.6 per game). His 22.7 points per game scoring average in league play ranks first while he also ranks sixth in free throw percentage (.806) against conference foes.
UT Martin plays in front of its home crowd for the first time in nearly three weeks this Thursday, Feb. 6 when it plays host to Tennessee Tech at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks close out a weekend home stretch on Saturday, Feb. 8 against Jacksonville State at 4 p.m.
