The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team heads into the final week of the regular season with back-to-back home games beginning with an Ohio Valley Conference matchup against SIUE on Thursday, Feb. 27. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Thursday's game serves as Student Night with all fans encouraged to wear black. The first 500 Skyhawk students will receive a special black, dri-fit Skyhawk t-shirt while various other prizes will be given away including Apple Air Pods and a chance to shoot a half-court shot for $500.
The Skyhawks (18-9, 14-2 OVC) enter the final week of the season in a tie for first place atop the OVC standings. UT Martin needs two victories to secure at least a tie of the program's sixth OVC championship and the No. 1 seed in next week's OVC Basketball Championship held in Evansville, Ind.
UT Martin currently leads the league in scoring offense (78.2 ppg), field goal percentage (47.3 percent), assists (16.8 apg) and scoring margin (+16.6). Individually, the Skyhawks boast two of the league's top scorers in Chelsey Perry (26.4 ppg, first) and Maddie Waldrop (15.4 ppg, fifth). Additionally, Perry leads the country in points (630) and field goals made (2420 while ranking second with 23.3 points per game.
The matchup features two of the OVC's coaching veterans in UT Martin's Kevin McMillan and SIUE's Paula Buscher. McMillan ranks third in OVC history with a career mark of 214-135 in his 11th season while Buscher sits just outside the top-10 with a 111-131 record in eight seasons.
SIUE (3-24, 1-15 OVC) enters Thursday's contest looking to snap a 14-game losing streak after posting a win on the opening weekend of the conference season. Junior Allie Troeckler – who missed the previous matchup against UT Martin – leads the team in scoring (10.7 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg). Recently Mikayla Kinnard earned her second OVC Freshman of the Week honor of the season after averaging 16.0 points and 3.0 assists on the week.
Thursday's meeting marks the 27th game in series history between the two programs with UT Martin holding an 18-8 advantage. The Skyhawks have won five straight against the Cougars, including a 79-39 victory in Edwardsville back on Jan. 25.
