MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team goes on the road for the first time during the 2020-21 campaign when it opens its Ohio Valley Conference schedule at Southeast Missouri on Friday, Dec. 18. Tipoff time from the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo. is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks are 2-0 for the first time in a decade and were one of 76 undefeated teams in NCAA Division I men's basketball as of Wednesday morning. This marks the fourth time that UT Martin has begun a season with back-to-back wins since joining the Division I ranks in 1992 (also accomplishing the feat in 2010-11, 2002-03 and 2000-01).
Balanced scoring and an air-tight defense have been big keys to the Skyhawks' early season success. Four UT Martin players (Eden Holt, Cameron Holden, Jaron Williams, Ajani Kennedy) average double figures in the scoring column with freshman Anthony Thomas coming in just shy of that category at 9.5 points per outing. On the flipside, the Skyhawks have forced the opposition into 39 turnovers and a .370 field goal percentage (47-of-127) this season.
The UT Martin and Southeast Missouri series has been one of the most even matchups in the OVC in recent memory. These teams have a 19-19 record against each other since the 2002-03 season and have gone into overtime three times since 2016. Each of the last six meetings have been decided by single digits.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Brad Korn, the Redhawks are 2-3 this season with all three setbacks coming in overtime. That includes a 66-63 loss at Evansville on Tuesday evening, a squad that the Skyhawks defeated by a 93-87 margin in double overtime on Dec. 2.
Eric Reed, Jr. came off the bench to lead Southeast Missouri with 16 points against Evansville while Nana Akenten (14) and Nolan Taylor (13) also reached double figures in the scoring column.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will be live from courtside calling all the action on the radio airwaves locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, in addition to a link to live stats, can be found at the top of the webpage.
