MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball program will conduct its annual First Pitch Dinner on Friday, Jan. 31 at the Duncan Ballroom in the Boling University Center. The meal will be served at 6:30 p.m.
Rex Brothers, who spent seven seasons in the Major League Baseball ranks, is this year's featured speaker. Brothers was drafted in the first round with the 34th overall pick by the Colorado Rockies in 2009, making his big league debut at age 23 in 2011. The hard-throwing southpaw posted a 2.88 ERA with 59 strikeouts over 40.2 innings as a rookie before going 8-2 over a career-best 75 appearances in 2012. The following year, he notched a career-high 19 saves and a miniscule 1.74 ERA over 72 appearances.
A Shelbyville, Tenn. native, Brothers tallied a 20-14 record with 20 saves over 314 MLB appearances (all in relief), conceding only 244 hits while whiffing 311 batters over 266 innings of work. He spent the first five seasons of his career with the Rockies before pitching for the Atlanta Braves in 2017-18.
Brothers played collegiately at Lipscomb University, where he was the Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year in 2007. The following season, he helped guide the Bisons to their first-ever A-Sun championship and NCAA Regional appearance before shattering the program single-season record for strikeouts (133) as a junior.
The Skyhawks are coming off a 25-win season in 2019, tying the program's Division I record for victories en route to advancing to the second round of the Ohio Valley Conference Championship tournament. Third-year head coach Ryan Jenkins returns 18 players and welcomes in 22 newcomers for the 2020 campaign, which officially begins on Feb. 14.
Tables for the First Pitch Dinner are available for $400 while single tickets are available for $50. All tips during the evening will benefit the UT Martin baseball program. Those interested in attending are asked to send an RSVP email to Lora McDonald at lmcdon13@utm.edu by Jan. 27. Cash, check and credit cards will be accepted.
