RICHMOND, Ky. – For the second straight tournament to begin the 2019-20 season, the University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad was responsible for a second-place finish as the Skyhawks shot an 847 (+7) at the Raising Canes Intercollegiate hosted by Eastern Kentucky University.
UT Martin concluded play with a 286 (+6) during today's final round, finishing first out of the seven Ohio Valley Conference schools competing in the field. The Skyhawks led the 54-hole event in par-3 scoring (3.07, +4) and birdies (54), securing nine more birdies than any other team in the tournament. Northern Kentucky (840, E) was the only team to shoot even-par or better in the 12-team field.
"The course played tougher today and we weren't as consistent as the first two rounds," Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "We hung in there and played well down the stretch, we had to make some birdies at the end to stay in second place. Another second-place finish is definitely something to build on. I'm proud of our start to this season – our team is excited going forward."
Reigning OVC Golfer of the Week Jack Story continued his blazing start to the 2019-20 campaign, as the senior out of Dickson, Tenn. finished fourth in the field of 74 with a score of 211 (+1). He led the tournament with 13 birdies and placed second in par-4 scoring (3.94, -2).
Mason Chandler headlined UT Martin's scoring lineup this morning, as the redshirt junior from Kenton, Tenn. shot an even-par 70 that included seven birdies – including three straight to begin his round.
Nick Wolf remained consistent today with his third consecutive 71 in the tournament while Story collected a 72 this morning. Tate Chumley and Ross Redmont were not too far behind as both Skyhawks carded a 73 to complete the team scoring.
For the tournament, Chumley's 212 (+2) was good enough for 13th place while Wolf (213, +3) and Redmont (215, +5) placed 16th and 20th, respectively. Chumley led the tournament in par-3 scoring (2.67, -4) while Wolf ranked amongst the event leaders in par-5 scoring (4.33, third) and par-3 scoring (3.00, fourth).
Chandler finished out the tournament with a cumulative score of 220 (+10) after shooting the final 36 holes at 2-over par. Competing as an individual was UT Martin freshman Jacob Uehlein, who rounded out his event with a 78 today on his way to a 230 (+20).
The Skyhawks return to the links on Sept. 23-24 when they travel to Madison, Ill. for the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational held at Gateway National.
