CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad took away several positives from its season-opening APSU Fall Invitational over the weekend.
Making her collegiate debut, Aziza Aubin captured the Flight 3 singles consolation championship, notching three wins in the process. After the freshman out of Sussex, England was narrowly defeated in the opening round by Austin Peay's Ana Albertson, Aubin defeated three straight Ohio Valley Conference opponents on the way to the victory. She dispatched Belmont's Taylor Trondson (6-3, 6-3) before downing Southeast Missouri teammates Grace Powderly (6-2, 6-2) and Maja Lundell (6-0, 6-2).
Sophomore Sina Albersmeier also shined in her Skyhawk debut, as the transfer from Martin Methodist College won her opening matchup in Flight 2 singles. She came away with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-3 victory over Chattanooga's Callie Billman before falling in a tough tiebreaker to Belmont's Peyton Lee (6-2, 0-6, 10-8).
Mizuki Sakurai also collected a singles victory in the Flight 1 singles, advancing to the consolation semifinals. Amelia Campbell (Flight 1), Jule Streif (Flight 2) and Natasha Sijan (Flight 3) also represented UT Martin in singles action.
In doubles, the Skyhawk team of Albersmeier and Streif earned a hard-fought win in the opening round of Flight 2 doubles. UT Martin made short work of the Belmont tandem of Nikki Christiansen and Maria Plaksina, advancing to the flight quarterfinals in the process.
Additionally, Aubin and Sakurai joined forces to compete in Flight 1 doubles while the Skyhawk representatives in Flight 2 doubles (Campbell and Sijan) were forced to withdraw due to an injury.
All in all, UT Martin collected six total victories in a competitive field that included host Austin Peay, Belmont, Chattanooga Murray State, Southeast Missouri and Western Kentucky.
"We were down a few players because of injuries but we still came away with several wins against high-quality opponents," Skyhawk head coach Dennis Taylor said. "We need to get healthy but our potential was on full display this weekend."
The Skyhawks close out the month of September with a home matchup against Christian Brothers on Saturday, Sept. 28. The match, which takes place during "Family Weekend" at UT Martin, will begin at 3 p.m.
